For the past 14 years, Doug Sweetland has worked as an animator at Pixar Animation Studios and now makes his directorial debut with the Pixar short film, PRESTO. In his presentation, Sweetland will explain what it means to create a Pixar film and why the leap from animating to writing is more of a challenge than it appears to be. With a behind-the-scenes look into the production details, Sweetland will discuss PRESTO's relationship to both classic cartoons as well as Pixar's body of work in this Asian premiere event.

Dignity. Poise. Mystery. We expect nothing less from the great, turn-of-the-century magician, Presto. But, when Presto forgets to feed his rabbit one too many times, well, there's really no telling what to expect! This latest comical short film from Pixar Animation Studios follows the escalating high jinx of the amazing Presto, his rabbit Alec, and what happens onstage when a star magician's ego provokes some clever revenge from his neglected costar.

[About the Speakers]
screen Doug Sweetland
Director of "Presto"

A childhood love for drawing took Doug Sweetland down a path that eventually lead him to join Pixar Animation Studios in 1994. Serving as a character animator on Pixar's first feature film, "Toy Story", Doug continued to work as an animator on all of Pixar's subsequent feature films including "A Bug's Life", "Toy Story 2", and "Finding Nemo". Doug went on to assume the role of directing animator on "Monsters, Inc." and then took an artistic turn as storyboard artist on the studio's most recent film, "The Incredibles". Doug also worked as a supervising animator on Pixar's latest feature film, "Cars", released in 2006. Before joining Pixer, Doug studied character animation at the California Institute of Arts in Los Angeles.

screen Jay Ward
Associate Producer of "Presto"

Jay joined Pixar December 1998 as an art department production assistant on the studio's fourth feature film, "Monsters, Inc.". He was soon promoted to coordinator and in 2001 began early development work on the film "Cars". During production on that movie, Jay's keen knowledge of automobiles served him in a variety of other roles, including character team manager – which involved modeling, articulating and shading of each of the film's characters – and as a valued consultant to the film's director and co-director, John Lasseter and Joe Ranft. Jay has most recently served as Associate Producer on Pixar's latest short film, "Presto", which released with their ninth feature film, "WALL·E". Prior to Pixar, Jay served in the U.S. Naval Reserves and attended California College of the Arts where in 1993 he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration.
